West leads AU women to win over UNC Pembroke

AU Athletics announces 2020 Sherrill Athletic Awards; Quarles gets coaching honor

The 2019-2020 athletic year was filled with many accomplishments along with an unfortunate ending due to the novel coronavirus. At the end of every school year, the Augusta University Athletics Department hosts the William Sherrill athletic banquet at Christenberry Fieldhouse to honor student-athletes. Because of the virus, the banquet could not be held at Christenberry Fieldhouse and was done virtually instead on Thursday, May 29, as the award winners were recognized via social media. This past academic year for Augusta University athletics saw several Jaguar teams continue their success and some teams struggle. There were championships in men’s cross-country and in (women’s) volleyball. However, 2019-20 will long be remembered as the year that spring sports and the NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament were cancelled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. After last week’s first-round loss in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament to Georgia College, Augusta University head coach Dip Metress wasn’t sure if the NCAA selection committee would still put the Jaguars in the Division II men’s basketball tournament. On Sunday, Mar. 8, at 10:30 p.m. the NCAA Division II basketball tournament selection show aired, and the AU men’s team was given the fourth seed in the Southeast Regional. The Augusta University men’s basketball team defeated UNC-Pembroke 75-65 on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15, at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars (12-4 in the Peach Belt Conference, 17-7 overall) upped their winning streak to six games and now are just one game out of first place.
