Augusta University had a retirement party for longtime men’s basketball assistant coach Lenny Carlson last weekend. He was recognized for 50 years in basketball. He began coaching at the university in 1968, alongside Marvin Vanover. The second stint was between 1977-81, and he returned as a volunteer assistant for current coach Dip Metress in 2006 through 2018. “He showed up every day and never asked for a dime,” Metress said. “We’ll never be able to repay what he did for us. Loyalty is not a big thing that happens in today’s society, but he’s a loyal person to me and to our university.” In other sports news this week:

  • AU volleyball’s annual Pink Out match to raise awareness and support for the Georgia Cancer Center will take place on Friday, Oct. 26 for the Jaguars home match in Christenberry Fieldhouse against the Francis Marion Patriots at 7 p.m. …
  • The Atlanta Braves announced on Monday that they’ve agreed to a two-year extension with manager Brian Snitker than includes an option for the 2021 season. Snitker, who turns 63 this week, is a longtime fixture in the organization. He lead the Braves to 90 wins and a surprising NL East title. Overall, Snitker as the Atlanta manager has a record of 221-227 across two full seasons and part of a third. Snitker began his Braves managerial tenure as an interim replacement for Fredi Gonzalez but was soon given the permanent job …
  • The Georgia Bulldogs lost their game at LSU 36-16. The Bulldogs had been ranked second in the AP poll, but now they have moved down to No. 8 and LSU moved up to No. 5. Georgia’s next game will be against No. 11 Florida on Saturday, Oct. 27 …
  • After four of the top eight teams lost, the Associated Press college football poll has a new look behind No. 1 Alabama, with Ohio State reaching No. 2, LSU, as stated above, to No. 5 and Michigan moving into the top 10 for the first time this season. The Crimson Tide received all but one of the 61 first-place votes from the media panel, with Ohio State receiving the other. No. 3 Clemson and No. 4 Notre Dame also moved up a spot. LSU jumped eight spots after handing UGa. its first loss of the season …
  • Drew Brees passed Peyton Manning to become the NFL’s leader in career passing yards, breaking the record in the second quarter of the Saints‘ 43-19 win over the Washington Redskins. With this game, Brees total passing yards came to 72,103 yards, passing Manning whose record was 71,940 …
  • Giants players’ frustration with QB Eli Manning’s deteriorating play is boiling over. They have grown exceedingly frustrated with the limitations of their offense under the aging quarterback. It’s believed that he is no longer able to get the ball downfield and skeptical of his ability to lead this team at this stage of his career …
  • Baseball is nearing the last stage of the season. The Boston Red Sox advanced to the World Series after winning four of five games in the ALCS with the Houston Astros. In the NLCS,  the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the Milwaukee Brewers 3-games-to-2 series lead heading into tonight’s Game 6 matchup in Milwaukee …
  • Tobin Heath and Alex Morgan from the United States women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half on their game against Jamaica. The U.S. beat Jamaica with a score 6-0. The team earned a spot in the World Cup next summer in France. The top-ranked United States team is the defending champion of the sport’s premier event, having won the final in the 2015 World Cup against Japan. It was the team’s third World Cup title …
  • Lakeside High School will visit Grovetown High School Friday at 7:30 p.m. In a Region 3-AAAAAA matchup. Two county programs will put their 2-0 record in region play on the line. A clear path toward a potential region title is on the line. Grovetown picked up a close victory this past Friday with a 14-7 victory over Greenbrier High, to move to 3-4 overall. Lakeside has defeated Evans and Alcovy in consecutive weeks to get to 2-0 in the region and 4-2 overall on their season …
  • The NBA season opened on Oct. 16 with the defending champion Golden State Warriors and runners-up Boston Celtics getting opening-night victories. The much anticipated opening of the LeBron James era in Los Angeles got off to a bit of a fizzling start as the Lakers lost at Portland, 128-119. James had 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Damian Lillard paced Portland with 28 points, and reserve Nik Stauskas added 24. The Blazers won their 18th straight home opener to extend an NBA record. It was the Blazers’ 16th straight victory over the Lakers.
