The Augusta University men’s basketball team has gained six new players going into the upcoming 2018-2019 season.
Coach Dip Metress says that his new players have started working out and adjusting to playing with the returning players in pickup games at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Metress said so far with the new players being “physically younger than everybody it is tough on them” to mesh with the team and the more seasoned players.
The team has gained two guards from the Washington, D.C., area in Tyree Myers from Baltimore and Darren Lucas-White from Washington. The other three freshmen joining the team are Robert Bärlund from Finland, Jack Johnson from Florida and Alex Johnson from Valdosta. The transfer, Rafael Monteiro, comes from Brazil and played junior college basketball at Utah State University Eastern.
This season’s schedule has been released for the Jaguars and this may be a season of rebuilding a team after losing their star player in forward Tamyrik Fields, who led the team in scoring and was named all-conference.
“Well, we’re opening up with an exhibition at South Carolina (on Oct. 26), which is not good for us,” said Metress, who will be in his fifteenth season at the helm of the AU program. “Where they’re good, we’re new.”
The three seniors, forward Tyvez Monroe, guard Aaron Byrd and forward Deane Williams, are set to lead and carry the team this season.
The season opener will be Nov. 9 against Mount Olive in Wilson, N.C. The next day, the Jags will play Barton College. Both games are at Barton.
